A multimillion-dollar investment in better train services for passengers in Victoria’s north can now begin, with the Andrews Labor Government starting to receive funding for the Regional Rail Revival program.

Minister for Public Transport and Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan and Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards today announced that work on the Bendigo Echuca Line Upgrade can start, to deliver more frequent and reliable train services that will bring major benefits to local passengers.

The upgrade will enable more services between Epsom, Eaglehawk, Kangaroo Flat and Bendigo, delivering stage two of the Bendigo Metro to give locals a metro-style train service. This will be made possible following signalling upgrades from Bendigo to Epsom and Eaglehawk as part of the investment.

Echuca trains will be faster and able to run more often following the upgrade, with sleeper and track upgrades to increase the maximum speed between Epsom and Echuca from 80 km/h up to 130 km/h.

Other improvements will include level and pedestrian crossing upgrades, as well as train control and protection system changes to deliver a more reliable service for Bendigo and Echuca line passengers.

The $1.57 billion Regional Rail Revival program will create more than 1,000 jobs across the state, boost local economies and deliver opportunities for suppliers.

It will also develop industry skills and ensure local content through the Andrews Labor Government’s Local Jobs First –  Victorian Industry Participation Policy.

At least 10 per cent of the program’s total work will be completed by apprentices, trainees or engineering cadets as part of the Major Project Skills Guarantee.

In addition to Regional Rail Revival works, the Labor Government has invested in passenger services in the state’s north including 38 new services on the Bendigo line since 2015, as well as car park upgrades at Woodend, Castlemaine, Gisborne and Kyneton.

Detailed design and planning is already underway on Regional Rail Revival, including the Bendigo Echuca Line Upgrade, with early work to commence in the coming months.
