The Andrews Labor Government will completely restore a further six W-Class trams for Melbourne’s City Circle Route.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan today announced the trams would be brought back to life with the works to be carried out at the Bendigo Tramways Depot and Workshop.

This will take the number of W-Class trams restored to their former glory to 12.

Each restoration is a significant and complex undertaking, including the extensive stripping down and rebuilding of the tram using rare trades, and takes around 7000 hours to complete.

By restoring W-Class trams and investing in 80 new low-floor trams, the Government  is  working to preserve the heritage of Victoria’s tram network as well as building capacity for its future.

The complete refurbishment of a W-Class tram includes:

  • New impact resistant driver’s cabin
  • Removal of high voltage wiring from the driver’s cabin
  • New electronics and wiring for improved reliability and electrical performance
  • A complete rebuild of the body to include better safety features
  • Painting and restoring the green and gold livery.

These works will be part of the new contract with KDR (Keolis Downer), who operate Melbourne’s Tram network.

Each   restoration   is  a  significant  undertaking,  involving  extensive stripping  down  and  rebuilding  of  the vehicle to ensure it meets modern safety standards and provides a reliable and comfortable service.
