National Literacy and Numeracy Week 2011

Friday, 2 September 2011

Jacinta Allan, Member for Bendigo East today visited Weeroona College Bendigo as part of National Literacy and Numeracy Week for 2011.

Ms Allan met with Year 8 students from the college to share her love of reading with them and to talk with them about her role as a local Member of State Parliament.

"I have always loved reading and was thrilled to be able to share one of my favourite books from my early teenage years with the year 8 students."

Ms Allan read a chapter from John Marsden's book ‘So Much To Tell You'.

"I remember being moved by the story of a young girl's struggle to rediscover 'normality' following a traumatic family incident. Told through the girl's voice as she writes in her journal I believe it still connects with some of the issues and challenges young people face today."

"It is so important to have good literacy and numeracy skills. This week is a great way to impress on young people the importance of these skills and the fun you can have with them".

"I'm very pleased to have had the opportunity to participate in the Celebration of National Literacy events and congratulate Weeroona College students on getting involved."
