Bendigo Labor MPs support nurse-to-patient ratios

Thursday, 24 November 2011

Bendigo Labor MPs, Jacinta Allan and Maree Edwards, joined Bendigo nurses as they marched on Parliament today to send a clear message to the Liberal National Government that nurse-to-patient ratios must be retained.

Speaking at the rally, Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews recommitted a future Labor Government to reinstating nurse-to-patient ratios and fixing any damage wrecked by Premier Baillieu and his Liberal-National Coalition Government.

"Nurse-to-patient ratios are about supporting nurses and making sure local patients get quality care, and they work," Ms Allan said.

"It's shameful the Liberal-National Government is so determined to undermine nurse-to-patient ratios by replacing nurses with unregistered and unqualified nursing assistants," Ms Allan said.

"If Mr Baillieu ignores the pleas of nurses and the community to retain nurse-to-patient ratios, I am pleased to be part of a Labor team that will reinstate them," Ms Edwards said.

"Labor understands how important our nurses are and we support the work they do. And no nurse or midwife should have to use enterprise bargaining to protect nurse-to-patient ratios," Ms Edwards said.
