Minister urged to make Bendigo visit a priority

Thursday, 7 April 2011

Bendigo Labor MPs, Jacinta Allan and Maree Edwards, have called on Victorian Health Minister David Davis to make Bendigo a priority when he visits the region on 19th April.

"Since becoming Minister for Health, Mr Davis is yet to visit Bendigo Hospital. There is no more important project for the future of Bendigo than the building of Bendigo's New Hospital."

"That is why Labor put the Bendigo Hospital on the agenda in 2006 and fully funded Bendigo's New Hospital in the May 2010 Budget."

"Since the Liberal-National Coalition were dragged to match Labor's commitment at the eleventh hour there have been serious questions raised about their ability to deliver a new Hospital for Bendigo by 2016 as Labor had planned," Ms Edwards said.

"Mr Davis has avoided visiting Bendigo Hospital and avoided answering questions about the funding of Bendigo's New Hospital."

"That is why we wrote last week to Mr Davis urging him to visit Bendigo as a matter of priority."

"The Member for Rodney, Paul Weller, revealed in Parliament today that the Minister for Health had accepted his invitation to visit Echuca on 19th April."

"There is now no excuse for the Minister for Health not to also accept our invitation and visit Bendigo Hospital on that same day."

"Bendigo is located between Echuca and Melbourne and it should be very easy for the Minister to include Bendigo in his itinerary if he wanted to."

"Mr Davis has made visiting the Echuca Regional Hospital as a priority. We call on him to also make Bendigo a priority. Bendigo deserves answers from this Minister and the Liberal-National Government," Ms Allan said.
