Local Labor MPs slam job cuts at Bendigo Health

Wednesday, 7 September 2011

Member for Bendigo East, Jacinta Allan, today said that local Liberal National MP Damian Drum and his Government have turned their back on Bendigo jobs by ticking off on plans to privatise and close down services at Bendigo Health.

"Mr Drum said that this decision would be made ‘in conjunction with the Minister' (Bendigo Advertiser 5th July)."

"Mr Drum and his Minister, David Davis, have made this decision in partnership with Bendigo Health and thumbed their nose at the 5000 people who have signed the petition opposing the privatisation of pathology services."

"This decision will send a shudder through health services across regional Victoria as another Liberal National Government once again privatises health services."

"It also raises serious doubts about the funds available for the building of a new Hospital for Bendigo as closing linen and privatising pathology is all about saving money," Ms Allan said.

Member for Bendigo West, Maree Edwards has slammed the decision to privatise Bendigo's public pathology services.

"This is a backward step for patients and for staff.

"This announcement is devastating news for patients and staff at Bendigo Health and for the thousands of people in the community who signed the petition against privatisation."

"Hospital management have caved in to the Liberal National government's privatisation agenda."

"Privatisation will mean a loss of jobs and an inferior service, which will be paid for by the patients."

"Taking this service out of Bendigo and relying on a private provider from Melbourne will lead to long delays in results and possible misdiagnosis."

"This is not in keeping with the proposal for a World Class Cancer Centre, and is a watering down of a supposed state of the art hospital for Bendigo."

"The Health Minister has not once attempted to halt this privatisation of pathology and National Party government representative Damian Drum has been conspicuous in his silence on this issue and has not once stood up for the community and what they want."
