STATE GOVERMENT FUNDSSPECIAL CARE NURSERY BOOST

Morebabies will be cared for at Bendigo Hospital with the opening of two additionalbeds in the Special Care Nursery, as a result of a funding boost by the AndrewsGovernment.

The increase in beds will see the number of availablecots rise from eight to ten.

BendigoHealth Special Care Nursery can care for babies from 32 weeks or 1,500 grams. The acuity of babies who were admitted to the Nursery has gone up 30 percentover the past year, measured by the number and complexity of proceduresperformed.

Bendigo East MPJacinta Allan, said the additional cots means the Nursery can be moreadequately staffed to cater for the growing needs of the community.

“Itwill limit the number of sick babies being moved to other hospitals furtherfrom home,” Ms Allan said.

BendigoHealth Chairman, Bob Cameron, said the new facility had been so successfulthere had been a 30 percent increase in demand over the last year

“BendigoHealth also accepts mothers and babies from outlying regions with high riskbirths, at times these families were sent to other hospitals because in thepast we did not have the capacity to care for the babies. They can now come toBendigo making it much easier for things like accommodation and transport. It’s an important service for the region” he said.

BendigoHealth Special Care Nursery has approximately 30 staff, this number hasincreased by a third as a result of the additional cots.
