Bendigo Airport can now accommodate larger planes, opening up opportunities for new charter services and increased freight activity, in a win for local business and primary producers.

Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan and Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards visited Bendigo Airport today to officially open Stage 2 of the three-stage $15 million Bendigo Airport Redevelopment project.

Bendigo Airport is a hub for the aviation needs of the region and facilitates a range of commercial, emergency and general aviation services, including flight training, aircraft maintenance and charter flight operations.

The Victorian Government, the Australian Government and the City of Greater Bendigo have worked together to realise the successful completion of this important stage in the airport’s overall redevelopment.

Stage one of the redevelopment was completed in 2014, including 25 new aviation hangar sites, three new taxiways, improved road access and the installation of critical drainage infrastructure.

The Victorian Government contributed $4.7 million to deliver stage 2, which incorporates a new 1,600 metre runway, new taxiways, runway lighting, line-marking and control system upgrades.

Aircraft carrying up to 70 passengers will now be able to land on the new runway that will help realise new opportunities for charter services into the region, open up new access to export markets and make it easier to do business in Bendigo.

The new infrastructure will improve current and future access for emergency services and has helped to retain more than 50 local jobs in the sector. It will also provide national and international economic opportunities for the region, including those in travel and tourism.
