GOLD RUSH FOR RACING AT BENDIGO’S LORDS RACEWAY

Friday, 6 April 2018

Racegoers will experience gold-standard racing and enhanced oncourse facilities at Bendigo in 2018, thanks to a joint race day and infrastructure package worth more than $84,000 supported by the Victorian Government.

The government is contributing more than $38,000 from its Victorian Racing Industry Fund for the 2018 Golden Mile Raceday this Saturday 7 April, and for future upgrades to the perimeter fencing at Lords Raceway racecourse.

The Golden Mile Raceday is a flagship event of the Racing Victoria Autumn Racing Carnival, offering more than $1 million in prize money for the winning connections.

Patrons heading to the track will be entertained with a food and wine village precinct showcasing produce from across the region, as well as live music from five-piece cover band, Iffy Pop and roving performers.

The kids will also have plenty to do thanks to a Wild Action Zoo featuring native Australian animals.

Free return shuttle buses will operate between Bendigo train station and the racecourse, ensuring that racegoers can get safely to and from the track.

Under the fencing upgrade, 740 metres of new wire mesh fencing will be installed at the rear of the property to better separate the racecourse from neighbouring bushland.

The enhancements, which also include wiring for an electric gate, will improve horse, jockey and trainer safety by ensuring no wildlife makes its way onto the track. The fencing installation will begin in mid-April.

Bendigo Jockey Club is providing more than $25,000 towards the race day and fencing upgrades, with Country Racing Victoria and Racing Victoria jointly contributing $20,000.

Since 2014, the government has contributed more than $1.34 million to support 15 infrastructure and six thoroughbred race days at Lords Raceway in Bendigo.

The racing industry in the Loddon region generates more than $166 million annually for the Victorian economy, and helps sustain more than 1640 full-time jobs locally.
