NAPIER STREET GETS $100,000 KICKSTART

Friday, 20 February 2015

Member for Bendigo East, Jacinta Allan, today announced that $100,000 will be fast-tracked from the upcoming budget to commence planning works on the upgrade of Napier Street in Bendigo.

Napier Street runs through the centre of Bendigo and is the gateway to rapidly developing residential areas to the north of the city.

It's also an important freight and tourist route connecting Geelong to Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton and Benalla.

The Labor Government will duplicate Napier Street between Weeroona Ave and Scott St, to reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety on this notorious stretch of road.

Over the coming months, locals will have the opportunity to comment on proposed concept designs and attend consultation and information sessions.

The Andrews Labor Government is upgrading congested local roads in fast-growing regional areas to reduce traffic times, improve safety and create jobs.

Quotes attributable to Member for Bendigo East, Jacinta Allan

"We're taking action to improve this notorious stretch of road."

"The residential areas north of Bendigo are some of the fastest growing in the state, so it's critical to get to work improving Napier Street."

"I know how bad the congestion is on Napier Street, and I am excited that the Andrews Labor Government has fast-tracked to get this vital project started straight away."

"Last year Daniel Andrews and I committed $17.2 million to upgrade Napier Street. Over the last four years the Liberal National Coalition sat on their hands and did nothing as the congestion became worse. We have no time to lose and that is why we have brought forward vital planning money. "
