Vic Health's $1M funding for active clubs now open

Tuesday, 5 November 2013

Local State MP's Jacinta Allan and Maree Edwards are encouraging sports clubs in the Bendigo region to apply for VicHealth grants of up to $3,000 each for essential sporting, and injury prevention and management equipment.

Applications for the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth) 2013-14 Active Club Grants funding can be submitted now until 5 December 2013.

A total of more than $1 million is available to community sport and active recreation clubs across Victoria.

"The grants aim to make it easier for clubs to fund items or equipment that help them to improve safety and to reach out to new participants," Ms Allan said.

"Each year, the grants support more Victorians to become active and this is increasingly important as we see the impact of a lack of physical activity in the growing numbers of people with chronic diseases and other health problems.

"Regular physical activity not only protects against many illnesses, it also makes us mentally healthy, alert and resilient against the stresses of modern life."

Ms Edwards said that for 25 years, VicHealth has provided small grants to community sport and recreation clubs across Victoria.

"This year's Active Club Grants have been increased to up to $3,000 per club," she said.

"Many people drop out of organised sport due to injury and to address this, the amount of each grant has increased."

The focus of the grants will tackle two major barriers preventing people taking part in sport and active recreation - cost and injury.

The funding round closes 4pm Thursday 5 December, 2013.
