Hansard below: Bendigo Spirit: grand final

Ms ALLAN (Bendigo East) -- I rise to wish the Bendigo Spirit all the very best for this Sunday's Women's National Basketball League grand final appearance. Bendigo Spirit is Bendigo's only sporting team in a national competition. The team has been in the competition for some years now, and it is wonderful to see Bendigo Spirit make the grand final for the first time, playing against Townsville Spirit at the Bendigo Stadium this Sunday afternoon. Two regional teams are playing off in a national title, which is exciting in itself for regional women's sport.

However, I just want to say how proud I am to have been associated with the Bendigo Spirit organisation for many years. It was a long-held dream by many in the Bendigo basketball community to have a women's national basketball team.

We knew we had the talent; we knew we had the support, but we just needed to have the support to get out there on the court. So when plans started to be hatched in 2005, I was very pleased that the Brumby Labor government came to the table with significant funding support as a sponsor to help to get them off the ground and out on the court.

I note that the current government has continued to support the team, but I am so proud to have been part of those early days. I want to congratulate and wish all the best to coach Bernie Harrower, the players, the supporters, chair Jeremy Moule and the volunteers who help the girls every week -- including my dad. Tune in to the game this Sunday afternoon.
